Talented Underachiever

About

“So much potential” is the meanest thing anyone ever said to you.

They meant it kind. It landed like a bill you couldn’t pay.

Potential is just the word for the gap. What you could obviously do, minus what you actually did. People say it at parties like a compliment, and you smile, and you go home and lie awake doing the math on it.

So here we are. The talented ones. The half-built businesses and the good idea we never shipped and the thing everyone still swears we’d be great at, all of it sitting right where we left it.

We’re not lazy. Lazy people don’t ache like this.

We’re loaded and idling. The engine’s fine. We just never found the gear.

Every app, every course, every guy with a whiteboard has sold us the same lie. You’re not doing enough. Do more. Want it harder, whatever the hell that’s supposed to mean by now. As if the problem was ever the wanting.

It was bullshit. All of it.

The talent was never the problem. We got dropped into a world that only pays out for grinding, and grinding is the one thing we’re shit at, and we spent years calling ourselves broken for it. We weren’t broken. We were dropped in the wrong room.

This is the club for the wrong-room ones. Nobody earns their way in. You’re already in. That potential everyone keeps bringing up? That was the membership card, printed years ago.

Here’s the part they got right. You could.

You’ve known it the whole time. The person who shows up at 1am with the whole idea already built, who sees the pattern nobody else in the meeting saw. The one you describe to yourself and never to anyone else.

So we sat down in the waiting room. One more course, one more book, and then we’d be ready to say something. Potential you never spend can never be judged. That was the deal, and we all took it.

Nobody’s coming to call your name. Get up.

Everything you’ve read, noticed, argued with in the shower, it’s all still in there. Get it out. Put it somewhere you can see it. Watch the patterns show up, the ones only you would have caught. Make one thing out of them and put your name on it. Then the next one.

Keep learning. You were always going to, so let it show now.

We don’t do resolutions here. Nobody’s going to fix you either. There’s nothing to fix. There’s just the one thing to aim at, and forty-nine to let die.

You’re not behind. You were never in the race they thought you were in.

You’ve been a member this whole time. Now become who you already know you are.
